Dr. Ann Louise on Getting your ZZZ's

Nearly two-thirds of American adults suffer sleep problems several nights a week. Even worse, 58 percent of us experience one or more symptoms of insomnia, the most common sleep disorder.

Whether we have difficulty getting to sleep in the first place or wake up in the middle of the night to toss and turn, women suffer more sleep problems than men. And as we grow older, the incidence of insomnia only increases.

Cage Free Eggs for US McDonalds?

While most of their competitors are at least paying lip service to the idea of using cage-free eggs in their food, the board of directors for McDonald’s telling shareholders to vote against a proposal that would require McD's to use at least 5% cage-free eggs in its U.S. restaurants.

In a statement, here's how the board explained their decision:

USDA BioBased Labeling Proposed

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is making it easier for consumers to identify biobased products through the release of its proposed BioPreferredSM labeling rule. USDA's BioPreferred labeling program, published today in the Federal Register, intends to create a product label that would appear on qualifying BioPreferred biobased products. When final, this regulation will allow biobased product manufacturers to participate in a voluntary labeling program to identify biobased products on retail store shelves.

Paris Rooftops Abuzz

In the romantic city of lights, the bees are downright busy. Common sense says it is better to keep hives of stinging insects in the countryside, away from city centers packed with people. Yet on storied rooftops and public gardens in the urban jungle of Paris, the bee business is thriving.

Court Rejects GMO Sugar Beets

The government illegally approved a genetically modified, herbicide-resistant strain of sugar beets without adequately considering the chance they will contaminate other beet crops, a federal judge in San Francisco has ruled.

The ruling by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White rejected the U.S. Department of Agriculture's decision in 2005 to allow Monsanto Co. to sell the sugar beets, known as "Roundup-Ready" because they are engineered to coexist with Monsanto's Roundup herbicide.

Organic Milk Scandal

Aurora Dairy, based in Boulder, Colorado, the nation's largest organic dairy producer, is once again facing allegations of improprieties. Aurora had previously been found in "willful" violation of multiple federal organic standards by USDA investigators in 2007.

Toxic Beauty Products

Dr. Samuel S. Epstein, MD, spoke to the American Nutrition Association in March 2010.  Dr. Epstein detailed information from his recent book, Toxic Beauty: How Cosmetics and Personal Care Products Endanger Your Health . . . And What You Can Do about It.

With tremendous passion and energy that belie his 80+ years, Dr. Epstein explained how how many of the hundreds of common ingredients in everyday beauty and personal care items contain substances never subject to any FDA scrutiny for safety.  Some function as endocrine distruptors, many are carcinogens.
