The Center for Nutrition Advocacy (CNA) (NutritionAdvocacy.org) is the premiere national
advocacy organization working successfully to advance the pivotal role of nutrition practitioners
in health care through public and private policy.

The Advocacy Manager is responsible for executing the state-based activities of CNA, under the
direction of the Director of Policy and Advocacy.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Track, research, analyze, mark up, and monitor bills affecting practitioners who utilize nutrition tools
  • Interact directly with legislators to effectively communicate positions verbally and in writing, provide documentation, gain support
  • Build and maintain relationships with coalition members including updating response protocols, developing and disseminating action alerts quickly, writing year end highlights
  • Communicate and coordinate with other allied nutrition organizations, stakeholders and potential stakeholders in our Advocacy mission including developing/presenting webinars
  • Work with Director of Policy and Advocacy to build state-based coalitions to engage on bills and in legislative process
  • Respond to member questions regarding practice rights under various state laws
  • Provide analysis, reports and updates for Director of Policy and Advocacy and advocacy team, Board of Directors, for newsletters and other targets
  • Work with the organization’s database and communications tools as necessary to assist in communications including contributing to social media and updating website
  • Engage in background research as needed to understand operating environment of advocacy work and to conduct appropriate legislative actions
  • Represent the organization in meetings, negotiations, and hearings
  • Address other projects and duties that rise in priority level over time
  • Administrative duties pertaining to the above

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and TEMPERMANT:

  • Experience with state legislative processes including experience analyzing and marking up bills
  • Strong professional writing skills, able to synthesize large amounts of information to write pithy backgrounders, concise and persuasive documents for either legislators and public, committee testimony
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work proactively and independently and multi-task effectively
  • Very comfortable with technology including computer skills in Google Docs, Microsoft Office, Internet, Salesforce or similar databases.
  • Strong relationship building and clear communication skills, professional demeanor, and good judgment; self-aware, comfortable giving and accepting feedback

WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Previous legislative experience required; advocacy a plus; legal or paralegal work a plus
  • Previous experience working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment

SPECIFICS:

  • Hours: Full time required Feb thru May; range of hours per week negotiable other times
  • Location: Possible to work from home anywhere in U.S., but ideal is in either Chicago or DC area. Central office is in La Grange, IL (20 minutes west of downtown Chicago)
  • Must be willing to travel periodically to state capitols
  • Compensation: Based on experience
