Like a Virgin?

Extra virgin, light, with lemon, unfiltered, cold-pressed: the variety of olive oil on most supermarket shelves is dazzling. But what does it all mean?

These terms might be common currency among foodies and the farmer's market crowd, but they have never been enforceable, or legally defined in the United States — until now.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture in April adopted scientifically verifiable standards for nomenclature such as "virgin" or "extra virgin," with extra virgin considered the highest quality because it has the best flavor.

Rice Malt Shows Potential for Gluten-Free Beer

Malted rice could offer formulators a new weapon in their gluten-free arsenal after tests showed the potential to product the ingredient at the pilot scale, Italian researchers report.

Elena Ceppi and Oreste Brenna from the University of Milan report they obtained gluten-free malt from rice at both the lab and pilot plant scale. The scientists chose rice because not only it is free of gluten, but it is also similar to barley, they said.

EPA Screens 1,000 Chemicals

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ToxCast screening program has entered a new phase, screening 1,000 chemicals for potential toxicity to people and the environment. ToxCast is designed to determine how chemical exposures impact the human body and how the chemicals most likely lead to health effects.  When fully implemented, ToxCast will be able to screen thousands of chemicals in fast, cost-effective tests that provide people with relevant information.

EPA on Water-Fluoride Risk

On September 20, 2010, a new US Code of Federal Regulations for the National Primary Drinking Water Regulations was published.

For the last 24 years EPA recognized only crippling skeletal fluorosis as a adverse effect from fluoride in drinking water at levels over 4 parts per million (ppm).

On September 20, 2010, EPA changed its definition of “Adverse Effect” to ‘Potential Health Effects from Long-Term Exposure Above the MCL (unless specified as short-term).’

Gentically Engineered Animals

After a two-day public hearing on the approval of the first genetically engineered (GE) animal intended for human consumption, the AquAdvantage GE salmon, FDA held a public hearing today to discuss whether or not these GE fish should be labeled as such should they be approved. A 60-day public comment period on the labeling issue will be open until November 22, 2010.

Supplements of omega-3s, vitamins and minerals for prisoners may reduce the number of violent and aggressive episodes in prisoners, according to a new study from The Netherlands.

Nutritional supplements containing vitamins, minerals, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids were associated with a 34 per cent reduction in violent incidents, according to findings of a randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled trial with over 200 young adult offenders published in Aggressive Behavior.
